Laffin'
I have heard “Orinoco Flow” more times in the last couple of months than in the last decade and a half. One very good episode of Peep Show, and the director/viewer-breakup-inducing Fincher Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In both cases the song is coded as a joke, I think? Definitely with Peep Show, although not a mean one as that show’s relationship with the things its characters...

“Who’s to say that Gogol isn’t a Southerner, or that Flannery O’Connor might not be a Russian man in some essential way? We need to be more generous with our definitions. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking: Yul Brynner. You’re always thinking about Yul Brynner. His head is so mesmerizing and virile.” - I always am thinking about Yul Brynner, so Jack...

One of the first books I read living in France was Jeune Fille, Anne Wiazemsky’s memoir of making Au Hasard Balthazar. This was fitting a theme: one of the first magazines I bought immediately in France was Cahiers du cinema, and one of the first things I did by myself in Paris was take in a film at a tiny theater along the Seine (Marie Antoinette, which I hadn’t seen yet). So...

Bah, etc.
I wrote this negative review of Green Girl by Kate Zambreno, and now I’m not sure about what I said. Actually, if I had to rewrite it, I wouldn’t change a thing, but I would add that Kate Zambreno is a good writer and there’s no reason for me to use her writing as an excuse to rail against stories by less interesting writers. Oh well, it’s there forever. I feel like a...

Better than Taylor Swift
Things I love about Skeeter Davis via her pop songs*, in no particular order: - her ridiculously low self-esteem [“Don’t Anybody Need My Love”; “Don’t Let Me Stand in Your Way”] - her mad bitterness [“Silver Threads and Golden Needles”; “Ladder of Success”; “What Am I Gonna Do With You”; “What Does It Take (To Keep a...

I wrote a short thing about my problems with Brian De Palma’s Carrie. Includes: a Porky’s reference, a brief appreciation of Amy Irving’s look, a small defense of Piper Laurie, and so much more.

Do you remember President Nixon?
I reviewed Ann Beattie’s fan fiction about Pat Nixon, which wasn’t good fan fiction and wasn’t really about Pat Nixon. I didn’t love it!
